Match Reports - Season 2001 - 2002

Formby JSCOB Res - 2 Redgate Rovers Saturday - 5

The saturday side's season started with a defeat and a draw, so the lads were really fired up for this away game, and for the first time this season, had a full squad to choose from.

Rovers were soon ahead against Formby in what was another local Derby between the two clubs when Peter Baker scored a great headed goal. Seconds later Baker closed down the keeper and guided his clearance into an empty net.

Superb in Midfield, Rover's defence did not have a lot to do but were tidy when called upon. James Beckingham made it 3-0 with a great volley but Formby got one back just before half time despite a brave attempt from Gavin Beat.

In the second half Paul Duffy broke his duck and James Beckingham scored again before a mix up between keeper and centre half gave Formby an own goal, somewhat flattering the score line.

Pinefield Villa - 0 Redgate Rovers Saturday - 5

The game started very well with a superbly taken goal following a one on one by Peter Baker, with Clayton Birchall adding a second soon after.

The second half started with Rovers underpressure from the opposition's long-ball tactics, and aided by the wind they began to bombard the goal. Man of The Match Neil Mackay producing a string of fine saves, and this injected Redgate into another gear.

Paul Duffy scored a fantastic goal, followed by a Mark Chambers special, dribbling through the crowded midfield and shooting on his weaker foot for a marvellous goal.

Redgate's fifth came from a great move down the channel on the right involving Colin Jackson, Matt Hendeson, and finished by Duffy for his second.

A fine team performance capped by a clean sheet, led by new manager Simon White.

Redgate Rovers Saturday - 2 Halsall Reserves - 1

Fuelled by the excesses of the sportsmans dinner the previous evening, Redgate started sluggishly and didn't produce much flowing football until twenty minutes into the game.

The first goal was scored after a James Beckingham free kick was fumbled by the keeper, and defensive rock Ian Hall squared it unselfishly to his brother Chris Hall to tap in possibly the easiest goal he will ever score.

For the rest of the first half Redgate peppered the visitors goal, but it wasn't until the second half that Paul Duffy was able to double the lead with a well crafted 20 yard shot. Man of the Match Matt Henderson, Mark Chambers and Gavin Beet worked tirelessly in a 5 man midfield, and they controlled the game from start to finish.

With their only shot of the game Halsall scored, but it was merely a consolation goal.

Formby Dons - 3 Redgate Rovers Saturday - 1

After recent successes on the pitch, Redgate were hoping to maintain their momentum against the previously unbeaten Dons Team. After starting the first 20 minutes as the dominant team, Rovers were unlucky to concede through the Dons first shot on target.

The home side's second was scored from a free-kick, and Redgate began to lose their shape and become disheartened. Centre backs Chris Hall and Man of the Match Graham Duffy were outstanding, Duffy playing in only his first game for the club.

After the interval Ade Richmond switched from the centre to the left of midfield, and plenty of chances followed. The Dons then scored through a deflected free-kick, but Redgate then clawed a goal back from another debutant Andy Shaw with a cracking shot following a corner. Tony Williams ran tirelessly up front and was unlucky not to score a few goals, but it ended Dons 3, Redgate 1.

Redgate Rovers Saturday - 1 Devonshire - 4

Redgate had prepared for a tough fixture as they were up against the League's 2nd placed side. From the start Rovers played some nice football but the game did not have chance to flow, and before long Devonshire were 2-0 ahead although the lads thought you were unlucky to be in this position as both goals followed big claims of Offside.

Redgate were awarded a penalty after the industrious Gavin Beet played in Mark Chambers with a glorious pass, only to be hacked down in the box. James Beckingham dispatched the penalty, and Rovers were back in the game. Now believing they could get something from the match and were spurred on by the excellent form of Ian Hall. Seconds after the restart, Devonshire were awarded a penalty, but their own striker was Sent off after he retaliated to the challenge made against him.

Neil Mackie made a fabulous save, and Redgate threw their all at the opposition goal. It was not to be, and Rovers did in fact have their own claims for a penalty turned down. Unfortunately, as they continued to press forward, the otherwise superb defence was caught flat footed, and Devonshire scored a third. Manager Simon White decided to make two substitutions but one more goal was conceded in what was a flattering score line.

Open Age Redgate Rovers Saturday - 6 FJSC Old Boys - 5

After defeats in the previous two matches, Chris Hall opened the scoring with a volley, connecting well from a freekick. Minutes later, he then mis-kicked a clearance which looped into his own net.

Man of the match and four goal hero Tony Williams then began his own remarkable afternoon with a neatly taken goal from a Simon White header which rebounded off the stanchion. He then scored again after a one-on-one with the keeper, leading Redgate into a 3-1 lead at the interval.

Mark Chambers was then introduced into the midfield, but some shocking defending led to the Old Boys getting three goals in quick succession, and this sparked Williams and his superb strike partner Adrian Richmond to tease the opposition. James Beckingham tucked away a penalty after Richmond was brought down in the area, levelling the scores once again.

Tony Williams then scored two more, his second surely a goal of the season, chipping the keeper from 35-yards, but there was still time for the opposition to scare Redgate with a goal, but it was not enough, and Redgate took all three points.

Redgate Rovers Saturday - 0 Crossens - 0

After the previous weeks bad result, Redgate knew that a solid team performance was essential to kick start their season, and duly obliged. From the kick-off, the team both defended and attacked with gusto, and played a short passing game. Adrian Richmond was unlucky though to have two goals disallowed.

Man of the match Graham Duffy was superb throughout, and Redgate were unlucky not to take all the points in this one.

Redgate Rovers Saturday - 3 Formby Dons - 5

Two early mistakes in the first 15 minutes gave the Dons a two goal lead in this fixture which ensured Redgate had to give their all to pull it back. They began their fight back following a trip on the fit-again Paul Duffy.

James Beckingham duly dispatched the penalty, but Redgate then lost Ian Hall to an ankle injury. He was replaced by Ste Baker, and Redgate continued to pressure.

Luck was not on their side and they lost another goal, but then after the break Man of The Match Gavin Beet scored two great goals to bring Redgate back into it, but a further goal in the dying minutes meant they lost out in the end.

Redgate Rovers Saturday - 7 Pinefield Villa - 2

On a bearly playable pitch, Redgate got stuck in from the whistle, and Peter Baker opened the scoring with a brilliant solo run from the half way line on the break.

Baker then scored another soon after when his brother Ste cooly slotted the ball into his path. Pinefield scored from a deflected free kick.

After half time Rovers took their foot off the pedal but still managed to score five more, Paul Duffy scored three in quick succession to claim his Hat Trick, Ste Baker added another, and substitute Tony williams helped himself to a great solo goal.

The defence was also superb, and restricted the opposition to speculative shots from distance. This well deserved win should take Redgate into third in the league. This followed a tremendous local derby, 7-3 victory last week over Formby JSCOB. Scorers, P Baker 2, P Duffy 2, S Baker 1, G Beat 1, J Beckingham 1.

Crossens - 1 Redgate Rovers Saturday - 4

On a suprisingly playable pitch, Rovers started in the same manner as last week, Peter Baker slotting a clinical goal after running from the half way line on the break. He then added another moments later before a dubious penalty gave the opposition a goal back.

Despite the midfield and forward line playing some champagne football, the second half only produced two more goals - mainly due to the busiest man on the pitch - the Crossens goalkeeper.

Paul Duffy added another before Peter Baker capped his Hat Trick with a superb effort, Rovers' 21st goal in 4 games.

Herald - 1 Redgate Rovers Saturday - 2

Rovers played some good attacking football with Chris Oakley partnering the excellent Paul Duffy up front. James Beckingham put Rovers in front with a penalty following some good build up play.

Mark Chambers and Matt Henderson combined well in the midfield and after half time, Oakley popped up on the end of a lovely cross with a clinical finish for Rovers' second, making it 2-1.

Controversy followed when a Herald striker was sent off for a stamp on Ian Hall, who was joint Man of The Match with his brother Chris. Herald then grabbed an equaliser, but in the dying minutes Paul Duffy was again hacked down to leave James Beckingham to slot his second penalty and Rovers' winner.
